The short answer
In Pittsburgh, a standard sofa is $126, a queen mattress $103 and a standard refrigerator $164 to have carried out and hauled away. Bigger jobs are priced by how much of the truck they fill: a quarter truck is $241 and a full truck is $732. The order minimum is $100. There is no stairs fee, no same-day surcharge and no sales tax line, because hauling is not a taxable service in Pennsylvania.
The two ways junk removal is priced in Pittsburgh
There are two ways a Pittsburgh job gets priced. Per item is for a list you can name: a couch, the basement fridge, a washer and dryer, a TV the curb will not take. Each item has a published flat price, and the total is the sum. A sofa and a basement fridge are $126 + $164 = $290. By truck share is for cleanouts where counting is pointless: a redd-up basement in a 1920s rowhouse, a one-car garage in Brookline or Penn Hills, or an estate in Squirrel Hill. You pay for the fraction of the roughly 16-cubic-yard truck the load fills, from a quarter at $241 to a full truck at $732. If you can list the items in one breath, per item is usually clearer; if it is a room full of stuff, the truck tier is simpler. Either way you see the total before booking, from a photo or an item list.
Truck-load pricing (for cleanouts & mixed loads)
Our truck holds 16 cubic yards (about 107 standard trash bags). You pick the fill fraction; the price scales with it.
| How full | Approx. volume | Roughly | Flat price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4 truck | 4 cu yd (~15 bags) | One room / small garage | $241 |
| 3/8 truck | 6 cu yd (~22 bags) | Studio | $338 |
| 1/2 truck | 8 cu yd (~30 bags) | 1-bed apartment | $431 |
| 5/8 truck | 10 cu yd (~37 bags) | Large 1-bed | $513 |
| 3/4 truck | 12 cu yd (~44 bags) | 2-bed apartment | $587 |
| 7/8 truck | 14 cu yd (~52 bags) | Large 2-bed | $661 |
| Full truck | 16 cu yd (~59 bags) | 2β3 bed furnished | $732 |
$100 minimum. Carry-out, COI, freight-elevator handling, donation and disposal are included. Bigger homes and estates use multiple trucks at the same flat per-truck rate.
What drives the price in Pittsburgh
Because the price list is flat, the things that make a Pittsburgh job harder do not change the number. They do decide which line of the list you land on.
Old housing and basements
The City's median home was built in 1942, and basements are nearly universal. Decades of storage means many jobs move up a truck tier, and the heavy items down there, such as chest freezers at $146 and cast iron radiators at $123, have their own prices.
Dense, heavy material
Plaster, brick and concrete from rowhouse rehabs are heavy for their size, so concrete and masonry are priced at $219 per quarter truck rather than by volume alone. Cast iron tubs are $185.
Items with special handling
TVs and computers must go to electronics recycling under Pennsylvania law, and fridges, freezers and air conditioners need refrigerant recovered. Those costs are built into the flat item prices, such as $68 for a 42 to 65 inch TV.

| Basement fridge + chest freezer (curb refuses both) | $164 + $146 = $310 |
| Basement washer + dryer | $133 + $128 = $261 |
| Lawrenceville rowhouse bathroom: cast iron tub, toilet, vanity | $185 + $64 + $69 = $318 |
| Brookline one-car garage (1/2 truck) | $431 |
| Penn Hills estate, full house (full truck) | $732 |
| Bethel Park backyard hot tub | $390 |
Each price includes carrying the items out from wherever they are, any floor or set of steps, plus loading and disposal. If a list of items starts to approach a truck tier, compare both and use the lower total.
How flat-rate removal compares in Pittsburgh
Most of the established junk removal franchises serving Pittsburgh, including 1-800-GOT-JUNK, College HUNKS, Junk King and The Junkluggers, price by volume and rely on an estimate made on site, with the final number set once someone has seen the load. That is a familiar model, and it suits some jobs. Flat pricing works the other way round: the price for each item and each truck tier is published, you see your total from a photo before anyone drives over, and it only changes if you approve. A dumpster rental is a third option, better suited to a long renovation at a house with a driveway, where you do the loading yourself; on narrow City streets and hillside lots there is often nowhere to put one, and TVs and freon appliances generally cannot go in. Whichever you choose, ask for the total in writing and whether stairs and disposal are included.
Why City of Pittsburgh Bulk Pick-Up can't do most Pittsburgh jobs
The City of Pittsburgh collects bulky items free with your regular trash: sofas, recliners, tables, dressers, mattresses, box springs, stoves, washers, dryers, hot water tanks, toilets, windows and cabinets, with carpet and fencing in bundles no heavier than 35 pounds or no longer than 5 feet. The limit is two items per week, set out no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day. More than two items costs $173 for the first hour and $54 for each additional hour, arranged by phone and paid by check or money order. The curb refuses TVs, computers and peripherals, freon appliances, construction waste, tires, auto parts, batteries, light bulbs and hazardous chemicals.
It is the right answer for one or two accepted items you can carry to the curb yourself. It is not built for a basement, a whole apartment, a fridge, a TV, remodel debris or a house up a flight of city steps, and it does not apply in the suburbs, where each of Allegheny County's 130 municipalities runs its own hauler contract. Pittsburgh-specific cost factors (that we don't charge extra for)
- City steps and hillsides. The City has 800 sets of public stairways, and houses on the South Side Slopes, Mt. Washington, Troy Hill, Polish Hill and Beechview can sit far above or below the street. Carrying down every step is included, with no stairs fee.
- Basements and narrow rowhouse stairs. Steep cellar stairs in pre-war houses from Bloomfield to Carrick are part of the job, not an extra.
- Walk-ups. Third-floor apartments in Oakland and Shadyside converted houses cost the same as a ground floor; there is no walk-up fee.
- Winter ice. Slippy steps from December through March slow every carry. The price stays the same; pick a midday window and salt first.
- Narrow streets and alleys. One-lane parking and back-alley garages in older neighborhoods mean more walking to the truck, at no extra charge.
- Towers and COIs. Downtown and Strip District buildings that need a certificate of insurance get it emailed within 1 hour, free.
- Same day. Book by 4 PM for same-day pickup with no surcharge, 7 days a week from 8am to midnight.

How much does junk removal cost in Pittsburgh?
A sofa is $126, a queen mattress $103 and a standard fridge $164. Larger jobs are priced by truck share, from $241 for a quarter truck to $732 for a full truck. The order minimum is $100.
Why pay when the City takes two items free?
If you have one or two accepted items and can get them to the curb, use the City. Pay when you have more than two items, items the curb refuses such as TVs and fridges, things stuck in a basement or up the steps, or a job that has to happen today.
Do you charge extra for steps or basements?
No. There is no stairs fee or walk-up fee. The price is the same from a basement, a third floor or a house reached by public steps.
Is there sales tax on junk removal in Pittsburgh?
No. Hauling is not a taxable service in Pennsylvania, so there is no tax line on your total.
Are prices the same in the suburbs?
Yes. The same flat prices apply in the City and in suburbs such as Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Ross Township, Cranberry Township and Monroeville.
How much does a basement cleanout cost?
Most are priced by truck share: a quarter truck is $241, a half truck $431 and a full truck $732. A chest freezer at $146 or a fridge at $164 can be added separately.
