Where the Refrigerant Goes

Fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers and window air conditioners must have their refrigerant recovered under federal rules before the shell is scrapped.

That step is the reason curbside programs refuse them — and it’s already included here.

What Pittsburgh’s Collection Programs Accept

City: Some Appliances

Stoves, washers, dryers and hot water tanks are on the City’s list of accepted bulky items — within the two-per-week limit.

City: No Refrigerant

Anything containing Freon is excluded from City curbside collection altogether, whatever the count.

Mt. Lebanon

The township’s contractor takes appliances curbside, but a fridge or freezer needs a certification sticker showing the refrigerant was removed.

Everyone Else

Each borough and township sets its own terms through its hauler. We take any appliance, anywhere in the area, from wherever it sits.

Appliance Removal FAQs

How much does it cost to get rid of a refrigerator in Pittsburgh?

Plan on $164 for a standard fridge and $183 for a French-door or side-by-side unit. Refrigerant recovery is included.

Why won’t the City pick up my old fridge?

City curbside collection excludes every appliance that contains Freon, because the refrigerant has to be recovered before disposal.

Will you haul a chest freezer out of my cellar?

Yes. Chest freezers are heavy and awkward on cellar stairs, and the carry is part of the $146 price. Empty it and unplug it first.

Do I need to disconnect the appliance myself?

Unplug it and shut off any water line. Gas ranges and dryers should be disconnected by a licensed technician before pickup day.

Do you take old water heaters?

Yes, for $131. Drain it first if you can.

Will you take a washer and dryer together?

Yes — washer $133 and dryer $128, collected in the same visit.
